Travel chart

The chart which gives an estimate about the amount of materials handling between various work stations is known as "travel chart". The aim of the travel chart is to decide such layout where overall materials handling function is performed at minimum cost.



      Following are the steps of construction of travel chart:

• List all work stations and their distances.

• Prepare the sequence of the operations to be performed on each product along with the number of units to be produced.

• Here, it is assumed that each operation is carried out in each department.

• Based on the number of operations to be performed in each product, the total number of material movement from one department to other department is calculated.

• The department which is having highest material loading is required to be shifted such that the loaded department gets reduction in the overload.
